Advance Guard

1. A detachment sent ahead of a main force to insure its uninterrupted advance, to protect the main body against surprise; to facilitate the advance by removing obstacles, repairing the roads and bridges and to cover the deployment of the main body if it is committed to action. ( AFPM 3-8-1) 2. The security element operating to the front of a moving force. (PAM 3-04) 3. A task-organized combined arms unit or detachment that precedes a column or formation to protect the main body from ground observation or surprise by an enemy. It operates within the supporting range of the main body. (PAM 8-03)
