Area of Operations

1. That portion of an area of conflict necessary for military operations. Areas of operations are geographical areas assigned to commanders for which they have responsibilty and in which they have authority to conduct military operations. (AFPM 3-8-1, PAM 3-04, PAM 3-071(S-2008)) 2. An operational area defined by the force commander for land and naval forces. Areas of operation do not typically encompass the entire operational area for the joint force commander, but should be large enough for component commanders to accomplish their missions to protect their force. (PAM 8-03) 3. A geographical area, including the airspace, usually defined by lateral, forward, and rear boundaries assigned to a commander, by a higher commander, in which he has responsibility and authority to conduct operations. (PAM 3-03)
