1. An area of ground held or to be gained on the enemy’s side of an obstacle. 2. In river crossing operations, an area on the enemy’s side of the water obstacle that is large enough to accommodate the majority of the crossing force, has adequate terrain to permit defense of the crossing sites, and provides a base for continuing the attack. As a minimum, ground must be secured which eliminates enemy direct and observed indirect fires on the crossing site.
