Center of Gravity

1. a. The hub of all power and movement upon which everything depends; that characteristic, capability, or location from which the enemy and friendly forces derive their freedom of action, physical strength, or the will to fight. b. The key characteristics, capability or locality from which a military force, nation or ally derives its freedom of action, strength or will to fight at level of conflict. The center of gravity at each level of conflict may consist of a number of key elements. (AFPM 3-8-1, PAM 3-01) 2. Is the source of power that provides moral or physical strength, freedom of action, or will to act. The loss of a center of gravity ultimately results in defeat. The center of gravity is a vital analytical tool for designing campaigns and major operations. (PAM 3-00)
