Rear Area

The area in the rear of the combat and forward areas. Combat echelons from the brigade through the field army normally designate a rear area. For any particular command, that area extending rearward from the rear boundary of their next subordinate formations or units deployed in the main battle or defense area to their own rear boundary. It is here that reserve forces of the echelon are normally located. In addition, Combat Support (CS) and Combat Service Support (CSS) units and activities are located in this area. Is provided primarily for the performance of support functions and where the majority of the echelon’s sustaining operations occur. Operations in rear areas assure freedom of action and continuity of operations, sustainment, and command and control (C2). (AFPM 3-8-1, PAM 3-00, PAM 3-04)
