Reconnaissance in Force

A limited-objective operation conducted by, at least, a battalion task force to obtain information, and to locate and test enemy dispositions, strengths, and reactions. Even though a reconnaissance in force is executed primarily to gather information, the force conducting the operation must seize any opportunity to exploit tactical success. If the enemy situation must be developed along a broad front, the reconnaissance in force may consist of strong probing actions to determine the enemy situation at selected points. (AFPM 3-8-1)
